Small TortoiseshellWingspan 50mm Found everywhere, including parks and gardens. They are strong fliers travelling upto 2Km a day. Adults fly between March and October. The caterpillars feed on Nettles.

Red AdmiralWingspan 67mm The caterpillars feed on nettles. The adults can be seen from May when they arrive from the Mediterranean right through to October. They are found everywhere, including gardens. Can be seen in large numbers feeding on fallen apples and other rotten fruit. |

Meadow Brown
Wingspan 50mm Caterpillars feed on grasses like Smooth Meadow Grass and Cocksfoot. The Adults can be found between June and September in areas with long grass such as road verges and woodland rides as well as meadows. They tend not to be found in town gardens. They are weak fliers and can be seen feeding on scabious, knapweed and brambles amongst other plants. |

Orange TipWingspan 45mm The butterflies are usually seen in May and June only in damp meadows and open woodland or woodland verges. The long thin caterpillars (blue-white above, dark green below) can be found on the food plants (Cuckoo Flower, Jack-by-the-hedge and Honesty) eating the flowers and seeds. |

Wingspan 32mm The caterpillars’ food plants are Common Sorrel, Sheep Sorrel and Dock. Adults can be found from April to October. Any unimproved grassland with lots of Knapweed, Ragwort, Thistles or Marjoram are good places to look for them. The males can be very territorial, even attacking birds! |

Wingspan 35mm Caterpillars feed on clover type plants such as Bird’s Foot Trefoil. The adults fly between May and June with a second brood between August and September. They like unimproved grass and wasteland with a mix of long and short grasses with some bare soil. The adults feed on nectar from Clover, Buttercups and Thyme. |

Wing span 63mm Found everywhere, especially near woods and on garden plants such as Iceplant, Buddleia and Michaelmas Daisy. Adults fly between March and October. The caterpillars feed on Nettles.
