Bollin Valley Longhorn Cattle
Longhorns in the Bollin Valley
In the late 1980s, the Partnership took on areas of old pasture and meadow, including wildflower-rich grassland at Macclesfield Riverside Park. Grazing, with a traditional breed of cattle, both promotes a rare breed and benifits wildflowers. Hardy, docile longhorn cattle were chosen and in 1988 we bought 11 cows and 2 calves.
The herd has flourished over the years and has provided an educational focus, a mascot for the valley and has maintained the conservation value of the grassland. You can see the cattle grazing throughout the Bollin Valley – from Macclesfield Riverside Park to Wilmslow Park and areas round the Airport. They can also be seen annually, both competitively and on display at the Cheshire Agricultural Show. Cattle are on sale every autumn at the local Chelford Rare Breeds Sale and at other times by private treaty.
